Oregon Coast visitor dies after log rolls over himPosted: Apr 21, 2014 2:59 PM PDT Updated: Apr 21, 2014 3:51 PM PDT
A man visiting an Oregon Coast beach suffered fatal injuries when the ocean surf rolled a large log over him as he tried to help a family member Sunday evening.
Ming Hsieh, a 58-year-old man from Eugene, was visiting the North Jetty Beach near Florence with several members of his family. He was sitting on the sand and leaning against a log pole estimated to be 40 feet long and 25 inches in diameter.
An elderly family member had been sitting on the log when a big wave came toward them, moving too fast for the family to get out of the way.
The water knocked the elderly woman off the log and also pushed Hsieh and his daughter away from the log.
When Hsieh tried to help the elderly woman back to her feet, the receding water pushed the log and it rolled over him.
An off-duty firefighter then came to Hsieh's aid and pulled him to a safe area. Hsieh wasn't breathing, so the firefighter performed CPR and managed to get him breathing again.
Paramedics and police responded to the scene and took Hsieh to a Florence-area hospital. He was later pronounced dead from injuries suffered in the log accident.
